Tension and Cervical Headaches
Physical and emotional tension combined with disorders of the neck can cause headaches. We can treat these headaches and educate patients to prevent them.

These headaches present as pain in the base of the head area which may radiate to the back of the head, the temples, forehead and behind the eyes. Moving the neck or bending forward for a period of time makes it worse.

Common diagnostic guidelines for these headaches include:

  • Headache accompanied by neck pain
  • Headache originating or increasing with movement of the neck
  • Headache originating after prolonged static posture
  • Headache  increases by digital pressure on suboccipital muscles or upper cervical joints
  • Headache persisting after other causes have been ruled out
  • Patient unable to relax neck muscles in supine, jaw clenching, frowning

Physiotherapy management will include :

  • Suboccipital muscles trigger points release, massaging and stretching
  • Upper cervical joints mobilization
  • Cervical postural training
  • Mandibular muscle relaxation
  • Acupuncture
